MEDIA & FILM

IVONNE SERNA

MY STORY

I’m a Mexican documentary filmmaker and producer. My core focus is on environmental storytelling, driven by the belief that the fight for climate justice is inherently cultural. Through film and media, I aim to influence discourse and envision more sustainable futures, using storytelling to bridge the gap between research, policy, and public engagement.

Fluent in Spanish, English, and French, I’ve worked with NGOs, academic institutions, and media platforms across the globe, including the National Geographic Society and The Nature Conservancy, contributing to key conversations on pressing global challenges. My work has been supported by The Miller/Packan Documentary Fund, The Rogovy Foundation, and The Redford Center’s Climate Solutions Program. In 2023, I graduated from the Documentary Campus Masterschool, one of Europe’s foremost documentary programs, and co-founded ECOS, an impact studio dedicated to environmental storytelling. At ECOS, we develop strategic impact campaigns for independent productions, with a mission to elevate the voices of filmmakers committed to creating meaningful change through their craft.

In the heart of Mexico, the P’urhépecha town of Cherán stands as a bastion of resilience. When illegal loggers and cartels threatened their sacred forests, the community rose in defiance, reclaiming their land and future. Through the eyes of Susy, a young street artist inspired by the town's history; Paco, an environmental engineer contributing to its restoration; and Geno, a leader of the rebellion, this film explores how a small town’s fight for autonomy became a powerful symbol of indigenous strength and environmental stewardship.
